A special thank you to Brett, With the help and several hours studying I got my cdl permit! A very big step, one of many, in an exciting venture. It had been a few years since my eyes were tested. To avoid any unwanted surprises, I made and kept an eye appointment 3/30/16. Don't need glasses. I use 1.75 reading glasses . The good doctor said, "I was good 20-25 left eye, 20-30 in right ". So yesterday I go for my DOT physical. I fail with 20-50 in right eye. So I explain a week ago I'm passed by my eye Dr. Then this morning I go to the dmv to take the test for permit. They ask for medical card. Well I didn't have one because physician is getting confirmation from eye Dr. After several phone calls, picking up documentation, delivering those documents! The physician decided to give me another eye test. Surprise I passed! Then back to the dmv for knowledge, air brake, combination, tanker, HM, double /triple . Hundred and eighty questions later I get paper work to take to tag office. Seventy six dollars later I have that long awaited cdl permit!! Yea thanks to high road. Next step May 4 off to tdt to learn how to maneuver a trailer! I sort of leaned to drive a truck with a five speed and two speed rear end. Guess I can still clutch. Wonder if you can slip shift while clutching? Humm, anyone ever try?

CDL:

Congrats :) So how hard is the Oklahoma tests? Are they pretty similar to the High Road Course? I am very worried that I am going to fail them lol. I have been doing the High Road Course like crazy and I did pass Central Tech's practice tests, but my scores were kinda low for my tastes...

The test wasn't bad. Fifty on knowledge, thirty on Hazmat , I think twenty five each on the other four. Wasn't for the eye thing would have been a breeze. Hope I can learn to drive as well. If tdt instructors do as good, should be no problem. Do you have your physical yet? I ask because that guy from Thomas said he got his permit before getting his physical. I had to have my card first. I've already started my background check for HM. Should have that before I go to Drumright. Do you have any pre-hire? Do you plan to do otr? You still got about five weeks. Oh yea I was told before I started my test I could skip up to five questions. Would not be counted but if I saw same questions I had to answer.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.
