I've completed the written test for a CDL class A and have my permit. I'm looking for someone who owns their own truck and can train me and let me use that same vehicle for the road test. I am willing to pay 1K. I have a job lined up in North Dakota and am anxious to get started. I live in the UCF area but I'm willing to travel anywhere in Florida. A semi with a trailer would be preferable.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Honestly man, nobody's going to be able to help you here. Try looking on Craigslist for o/o in your area. But have to be honest. I don't think anyone's going to do it for 1k. Schools usually charge around 5k and an o/o couldn't afford to spend weeks training someone for only 1k. The fuel that you'll end up using will slice that 1k. They'll also have trouble with their insurance company if they do it, I doubt the insurance company would just accept you like that.

Not trying to be rude. But I don't think it'll work out man.

Kevin, I'm glad you've got a job lined up already, but what if things don't work out like you think they will? This is really a risky way to go about becoming a professional driver. When it comes to getting hired by a trucking company as an inexperienced driver, there is one thing that is more important than the CDL , and that is your certificate which provides evidence to your employer that you have been through a certified training program. There is not on owner operator any where that I know of who can provide you with that.

There are so many companies whose insurance policies require these things just so you can be insured by them. I know it's not the way you want to go, but if you take our well intended advice you'll be way ahead in the game. I wish you the best, but I've got to tell you that I seriously doubt you will get very far as an inexperienced driver, even up in North Dakota, without that certificate.

Best of luck to ya!

The only way an O/O makes money is when those wheels are rollin'..Take it from me, there isn't an O/O who will try to train you, when he could be rollin' and makin' those miles. AND the company he is leased to won't allow a permit holder to steer their freight down the road. I know this, because I bought our first truck, tho TSB had been driving for about 25 years. But out insurance company wouldn't let me drive MY OWN TRUCK...until I had a trucking school CDL in my hand. True...I went to a 4 day cdl school to get it...but I got it. THEN I could drive my truck....silly girl that I was.... BTW, that cdl school is still in business, but their classes are a little longer, and they are certified. I think it costs about 2k to go thru it...and your in FL, and its in WA.....

I completely agree with everyone above. You're not likely to save any time or money trying to get your training that way and it will put you in a bad spot if that job doesn't work out. You'll have to go through training again somewhere before anyone would hire you.

There are plenty of private schools that will give you great training and an official certificate upon graduation that are only a few weeks long and between $2000-$5000. That's the way you want to go.

I spoke with the owner of a truck driving school a few weeks ago and she said they go through about $1500.00 worth of fuel alone for each student they train.
