First time going down Monteagle in a truck. I made it safely but used the brakes more than I would have liked to. Anyway, anyone in the area this morning? Near the bottom of the grade there was a bad accident. A guy's trailer appeared to have exploded. I'm assuming he was carrying hazmat. It looked like someone hit his trailer with a missile, literally just rubble. His cab didn't have a scratch on it. Maybe his brakes got too hot? Just wondering if anyone else saw

This gives a little more info but not much...

Eastbound lanes of I-24 shut down in Marion County after tractor trailer fire

The driver told the Tennessee Highway Patrol that he un-hitched the trailer from his truck when he suspected the fire in the trailer. He was hauling a load containing fiberglass.

The fire apparently re-ignited after initially being extinguished, which prompted the closing of the roadway.

Part of Interstate 24 was shut down Tuesday morning after a tractor trailer fire.

It happened in Monteagle. Eastbound lanes near milemarker 150 are closed.

One witness described the guardrails as having damage from the fire.

No injuries have been reported.

I live in Chattanooga and have hauled many loads over the "Rock". Eastbound is no joke. When I'm going over, I'm usually hauling Sheetrock and it puts my weight at about 77k. I ease through the inspection station, wait for the green light, progress through my gears to 7th and set the engine brake. Turn on the 4 ways and ride the right lane. It can be a slow ride, but no load is worth my life. I have watched guys cuss me for "creeping" down, but I usually pass them at the bottom as the wait on the shoulder for their brakes to cool. If you catch it at the right time of day, it is an awesome view.

Yea I was around 78 or 79 hauling paper to Georgia pacific. I couldn't find the right gear, or my engine brakes are weak because I had to get on the brakes often. I made it without burning them up at least. A guy in front of me flew by going around 50 or 55. Smoking all the way down lol. I'm in dalton ga so I see that mountain often

Hey nice to see a couple fellow Chattanoogans!!

I remember Monteagle vividly from traveling as a kid to and from Indian to Chattanooga. I did westbound a few weeks ago but it was with a very light load.

Yea haven't done the westbound side yet. I think it's not as steep but curvier. I'm sure I can handle it though

Westbound isn't bad at all. Not even any escape ramps. Couple of decent curves but other than that it's pretty easy.
