The new rules, unveiled Tuesday by Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca at a DriveTest Centre in Brampton, will require all new truckers to take mandatory entry-level training at provincially licensed schools before attempting to pass tougher written knowledge exams and beefed-up road tests.

New Ontario truck drivers to receive mandatory training

From the article:

With the introduction of mandatory entry-level training, we are making sure that commercial truck drivers are properly trained before they are tested and allowed to drive on our roads,” Del Duca told reporters at a DriveTest Centre in Brampton.

Hey, it's only 2016 and they've already decided that after only 100 years of trucking in North America we should probably require that drivers have training! Woo Hoo! Hooray for high standards!

[sarcasm]

We're no better here in the states. You don't need any sort of education or training to get your CDL. If you can pass the tests (or pay off Illinois politicians) you can get your CDL. But we have groups claiming that new mandatory training requirements are on the horizon also.

Wow, what progressive times we live in, ya know? Lot of good critical thinking going on.

"Gee, do you think we should require truck drivers to have some sort of training before they're allowed to haul 48,000 pounds of gasoline in one gigantic tank while surrounded by SUV's full of children?"

"Require it? Oh I don't know. Is training really necessary???"

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Here in the state's the insurance companies have already pretty much made that a rule. If you don't go to a school to get your cdl you can't get hired.
