So I was all set to start my training on 8/20. Saturday's and Sunday's for 10 weeks. Now I'm having second thoughts because a few people have posted that doing weekends is not ideal because there is too much time off between classes. I would like to hear from more people that did weekends and how they feel about it?

Jay, my school situation was less than ideal, but that school doesn't normally offer weekend classes at all so I'm not sure any other part time course would compare.

In retrospect, for me anyway, if I had to do it over I'd attend a different school and made sure it was a full time course.

I can't comment on going to CDL school since I'm only scheduled to start in October, but what I can say from experience is this: If you've set your mind on doing something, don't beat around the bush... hit it with a big stick and get it done.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I went during the week, and I hated the weekend. I always lost some things during the time off. For me, weekend class would not have been good.

Jay, to be fair, I'm not sure my school experience would compare to other part time classes. We had so many class cancelations, too many students, not enough trucks.. it was an (very poorly planned) unorganized nightmare with both school office personnel and instructor, and other deaths that were all unrelated to each other. It was a really bad time, despite some great instructors. You can see what I mean by looking at my posts on Lake Cumberland CDL.

A part time program may work well for you and I wouldn't wish my personal experience on an enemy, much less a friend.

I went during the week and Monday's were always hard. Basically knocking off the dust from the weekend. I agree with Sam and say I wouldn't want to do the weekends. You'll retain much more going weekdays plus be able to test much faster.

Just my opinion.

Amen Chickie. Due to unfortunate and uncontrolled circumstances, my 8 weekend course turned into an 18 weekend disaster.

I know a regular school wouldn't work for me. That is why I went compnay sponsored. You get on the road immediately 24/7. I was afraid down timw would screw me.... and guess what.. it still does. After hometime I still need an adjustment

Oh the downtime totally messed us up. Then we had several weekends canceled due to the death of one owner's mother who also ran the schools office, the death of an instructor, the death of the 2nd owners daughter. Several times, we weren't able to have class for 2 weeks... talk about losing skills! It was crazy and not always the school's fault, but a nightmare nonetheless. then we had 3 different classes on the range all at the same time because some students didn't follow instructions and notify the school when they passed their permit tests. We had a huge number of students unfit for trucking, but the school wouldn't/couldn't cut them loose because it was a special employer situation. I was in the 2nd class and actually tested out before some students who were supposed to be done In early October 2015.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

This school only takes 4 students per class and does not allow students to make up classes. So there will never be more then 4 students. In their words, even if you are sick you come to class because you can't make them up. Also I was told they do not cancel classes. I believe myself to be capable of learning anything I put my mind to and having time I between classes does worry me a little but I'm still confident in my ability. That said, I have an appointment with the school on Tuesday and I will discuss the above concerns with them and may even change my start date if needed. I just don't want to make a mistake. I'm paying out of pocket $4500 for this class and I want to get the most for my money.

Any other input is welcomed
