Although my CDL school start date isn't until October, I like getting my ducks in a row so to speak. I've already found out that I can't sit the HAZMAT test until I have the full license, so I figured I'd at least get the TSA Threat Assessment out of the way so that I can do the HM endorsement on the same day I pass the road test and have it included when the DMV issue me with the license. Well, it turns out that the state of Georgia doesn't allow that either. What a bummer! Hey Rainy, at the end of October you may hit the delete button and wipe this place of the map. LOL

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Dan, be a bit patient on the Hazmat. Many companies will foot the bill for the background check. Since you're lined up for CDL school, if you have a company in mind, ask your recruiter about that. Then take the $140 you save and buy a baaaad CB.

Thanks Errol :) The company would have reimbursed the cost... Just like to hit the ground running and safe the company and myself the extra wait time. I'm definitely going to for a CB though hehe.

Hahahah people actually read my comments hahhahha.

There's a reason they want you to wait...it's cause you could commit some crazy abusive felony in thw meantime. Or suggest hillary clinton be tried for treason. Hahhah

I never bothered with hazmat. I know I have a secret service file where I was ejected TWIC for speaking my mind at poltical events. Shocking that I was so vocal.... I know. Hahha

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Dan, you'll have enough to do to get used to driving a semi. Getting out of school, and even passing your CDL driving test just allows you to drive a truck. you will still be scared and confused about many things for your first few months. You can read about other's first experiences (and mine!) here to understand that.

Take your time learning how the trucking business works first, then you can add the goodies like hazmat. The company will also know that you really need experience on the road before you add hazardous materials to your bag of tricks.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I got my PPL it didn't make me a pilot either and was only the beginning of learning how to aviate and navigate. Sound Advise as always. Thanks Errol. :)

One other thing. As a rookie you shouldn't be expected to haul hazmat. There is so much more involved than just passing the test. Good on you for trying to be proactive, tho
