New question for Ice & Brian, or anyone that has gone through the PST

Was reviewing the stuff on Prime here, and I notice they (prime) mentions the Hazmat endorsement as needed. The email i recieved they noted they wanted me to study up on the tanker endorsement, yet there literature also mention that tanker drivers required 1 year of experience.

Was curious if your email said hazmat or tanker endorsment as the extra to study up on?

What my recruiter told me is every driver is required to get the tanker endorsement. I am going flatbed but each driver that comes through must get it she said. As far as the HazMat it hasn't been mentioned to me yet but I'm sure I will find out more at orientation.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

From what I was told by two different recruiters at prime, you will not have to test for your hazmat when the DMV comes. You'll just be testing for tanker, air breaks, combinations, and general knowledge.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Ok, so here's the straight skinny. Rainy's thread pretty much still applies to orientation and PSD. As for endorsements go you need the tanker because the rules have changed on carrying totes, which both reefer and fb do. As far as hazmat , again, the rules have changed. When you go back to get your home state CDL , you will do your hazmat testing and background paperwork. To do it in Springfield would be redundant and cost you more. So, tanker at Sprimo, hazmat at your home state.

Good luck to both of you! And have fun!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Reefer:

A refrigerated trailer.

PSD:

Prime Student Driver

Prime Inc has a CDL training program and the first phase is referred to as PSD. You'll get your permit and then 10,000 miles of on the road instruction.

The following is from Prime's website:

Prime’s PSD begins with you obtaining your CDL permit. Then you’ll go on the road with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel training. After training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for final CDL state testing and your CDL license.

Obtain CDL Permit / 4 Days

  • Enter program, study and test for Missouri CDL permit.
  • Start driving/training at Prime Training Center in Springfield, Missouri.
  • Work toward 40,000 training dispatched miles (minimum) with food allowance while without CDL (Food allowance is paid back with future earnings).

On-the-Road Instruction / 10,000 Miles

  • Train with experienced certified CDL instructor for 3-4 weeks in a real world environment.
  • Get 75 hours of behind-the-wheel time with one-on-one student/instructor ratio.
  • Earn 10,000 miles toward total 40,000 miles needed.

Get them BOTH.

Tanker is pretty much a slam dunk - not a whole lot extra to know really. But some "portable tanks" (as in "totes") can carry enough liquid in a dry van , to require the tanker endorsement. It's an easy test, and nice to have it already on there - should you decide to make a move into tanks (which we don't recommend HERE, until you get some miles under your belt anyways).

HM you won't be able to take, until you have your CDL in hand - and doesn't transfer from state to state when you move your DL back to your home state. Why this is- don't know.

HM is THE HARDEST ENDORSEMENT test - just a lot more really detailed information to retain. I drilled the High Road hazmat section daily and repeatedly for a week - before I went in for my renewal a couple of years ago - breezed through it.
