There is no official distinction. Different schools or companies might use their own terminology for each but there is no universally acknowledged distinction.
At prime an "instructor" is for the permitted students to learn the basics to pass the CDL. Once the student gets the CDL they go out with a "trainer" for 30,000 miles in a team situation. In this phase you learn about handling the customers, the specifics if your division, handling the Qualcomm and paperwork, and refining your driving.
But as Brett says it is a company thing. They all use their own terminology. I know some trainers who use the words interchanagably and I know "trainers" who insist they are not instructors and do not want drivers who have not passed the CDL.
At prime the word "student" refers to permitted drivers. You do not receive at at this point. "Trainee" refers to CDL holders in the 30_000 mile phase. Trainees are employees who get paid during training.
