CBS Report Suggests That Older Truckers Are A Danger On The Highway Posted October 18, 2016 by Ashley

Today CBS News released the results of a five month investigation which they say shows that crashes are up amongst truck drivers in their 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.

The report, entitled “Are older commercial truck drivers causing more danger on nation’s highways?” blames a shortage of drivers and a lack of age-related regulation from the FMCSA for the number of older drivers behind the wheel of the nation’s semis.

Much of the CBS report is anecdotal — poignant stories told from the perspective of motorists involved in crashes with truck drivers over the retirement age. The report does contain some data analysis that on the surface seems to support their claim about the danger of older drivers.

CBS says that there is a 19% increase in crashes involving drivers in their 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s over the past three years. The report also claims that there were 6,636 crashes involving truckers over 70 in 12 different states between 2013 and 2015. However, the CBS analysis does not go so far as to say who was at fault in these crashes involving older truck drivers.

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle

FMCSA:

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.

What Does The FMCSA Do?

  • Commercial Drivers' Licenses
  • Data and Analysis
  • Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement
  • Research and Technology
  • Safety Assistance
  • Support and Information Sharing

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Just this morning encountered an old lady going 20 in a 60 who then decided to just stop in the middle of a busy 4 lane road put on her blinkers and have a look around. Maybe she was lost but you just don't stop in a dangerous place like that.

Oh man!! Some people complain that they think old truck drivers don't know how to drive anymore and that makes the news. Until I see some hard stats I don't care what CBS news says.

On the other hand, I DO wish drivers of commercial vehicles and personal vehicles alike had to pass a road test at regular intervals instead of the current system which allows drivers to renew their licenses indefinitely with no additional road testing. Like Jan pointed out, there ARE people out here who have, over time, lost the coordination and clear thinking needed to operate a vehicle in public.

But that's not everybody. I mean, G-town and Tractor Man are like 90 years old and can still drive safely.rofl-2.gif

There may be something to it, but why the increase? Is there a 19% increase because there's 19% more drivers in that age range? And the 6636 number doesn't mean anything without something to compare it to.
