I have been turned down by 2 cdl schools here in Pa. I had a dui in 1989, then 3 dui's in 1991(a rocky marriage I didn't handle maturely). Ended up with my class c license suspended for 25 years. No dui's since then, just driving under suspension tickets in 2000 and 2008. Now I have my license back and I'm being told the problem is a "lifetime limit" even though everything is over 25 years ago. Is there really no company that would hire me? No way to get some kind of waiver? Is it possible to get around this if I just bought a truck and started out as an owner operator?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

4 DUI's lifetime? Lucky you got your operators license back.

Even if you were to obtain a CDL - you'd likely have just as difficult a time GETTING INSURED.

4 DUI's may be next to impossible to overcome. If a company's requirements say no - then there's no such thing as a "waiver" for that company.

I honestly don't know but I do say spend a couple hundred to talk to a lawyer about approaching the state to have your record expunged. It couldn't hurt and depending on the job you're looking for may help.

My understanding is even if DUIs get expunged, the trucking companies will still find them and we arent talking 1 or 2 but 4! I cant believe the cdl school even accepted him as a student.

Having something expunged from a criminal record doesn't erase it from one's driving history / record.

Most private schools will take your $$ with no problems. Since they don't guarantee employment, or even that you will GET YOUR CDL (it seems), $$ is $$ to them.

The County VoTech I attended, reviews your Lifetime MVR (which you have to go get for them) and if it looks like you won't be able to get hired because of past issues - THEY TELL YOU and advise that you don't waste your $$ on the course.

My school was the same way Rick. Some companies will hire with 1 or 2 -- if the dui are really old. Ive never heard of a company that can get a driver insured (and thus hire them) with 4. That doesnt mean you wont find one, but its highly unlikely in my opinion.

I lived for 20 years in Florida. So if I call the DMV there I can get a "lifetime mvr" that will show FL and all the states I've lived in since I started driving?
