The Winter Is Here To Stay

Still about 4 days from the actual first day of winter, but the storms are already here. On Thursday I couldn't go into Wyoming because the Colorado state line to Cheyenne was closed to light hi profile vehicles. Yesterday from Pueblo to New Mexico road was closed to all CMVs due to wind as well, the gusts were getting up to 80 mph in some parts! Now this morning roads are snowpacked and icy from fresh snow. There was a crash at 0300 on the nb lane, I'm going south but that was enough for me to just wait out the storm today. I have cardboard bales, the paper mill can wait haha.

I figure if I can't move faster than around 30 it isn't worth it. Hometime is set up a day before Christmas eve and I don't want to miss it because of draining my clock, so I'll get a 34 instead and lay around in my truck sipping coffee.

I was very nervous about this but messages from my dm and the terminal leader changed my attitude. They encourage us to shutdown if we don't feel safe and to shutdown early if we are getting close to going through a bad area. A saying we developed on here, that I live by now is better to be late with freight than pitched in a ditch. No need to cool this load down. Stay safe and warm everyone.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

CMV:

Commercial Motor Vehicle

A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Realized I made a good choice now that Chain law is in effect on the Colorado side of raton pass.

Good choice Gladhand! I took the Chaining class in Phoenix several weeks ago. John Cramer was the instructor. He started the ckass with this statement. " I am going to teach you how to do something that I NEVER want you to do!" I will never forget that statement. He was DEAD SERIOUS when he said it too!

Yup unless I ran the Pacific Northwest or areas that constantly have chain law, I am not throwing iron. That law is for northbound too. Road is closed on southbound due to multiple wrecks. Sucks because my home is on the other side of the pass. Would have been better to be snowed in at home haha. Oh well, I get to be home for Christmas thankfully.
