At what gust speed would you shut it down with an empty trailer? Trailer is being blown sideways quite a bit at 35 mph gusts. Prime says 50+ is unsafe for empties. That seems like a stretch to me. I want to be safe, but I also don't want to be a wuss...you know?

You just said "its quite a bit" which means shut down. I just came from MN to IA amemoty and SCREW this. Wind advisory until 1700.

I'm on I35. As soon. As I parked the wind almost took the door of my truck. Seriously this wind is worse than WY .where are u?

I am south of Chicago. Snow is moving in, and I am supposed to head to WI for an 0400 pickup. Load goes to AZ but heading to sprimo first.

Kat if you can't control your vehicle or feel unsafe driving I would shut down. There is no hard and fast answer on what wind speed is unsafe, way to many veribles, just slow down to give your self more time to react and lessen the lifting force by the wind and find a safe place to park. I am in Morris IL it's shaking the truck pritty good here were I am parked.

I really felt badly about sitting in WY this weekend....guess what. Not inky did my FM tell me my jib is to be safe and his is to change the appt....but I got to the customer who said "we're glad you got here safely. Three trucks are late and one got into a wreck"

Night dispatch said last night a bunchnof drivers shut due to weather. Just put in the QC "shutting down due to wind" they will reschedule it...even if u hit snow later they will postpone again.

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

If you don't feel safe, shut her down. I shutdown for wind 3 times and as time has went on I can handle the wind. You kind of get a feel for it. If it doesn't feel safe, then it isn't safe. Plenty of miles to go around even more when our truck isn't taking a nap in the median. They won't think any less of you. At swift we get videos on the qualcomm and the most recent was encouraging drivers to shutdown in bad conditions and when we don't feel safe. It's cheaper to be late than to pay the repair bills and insurance bills of a wreck.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

I stayed put until wind speed died down a little. Once I got going and was headed west instead of north, that helped too...wind wasn't hitting broad side. I made it to my 01, and once I'm loaded, things should be fine. Appreciate the replies. This whole thing seems so objective based on prior experiences and such. If I don't feel comfortable driving, my FM has never given me any grief. He's great!
