Does anyone have advice for me as I am about to start hauling freight on a flabed?
I just recently switched from reefer to flatbed. Best advice I can give you is if possible, ride with someone that has been doing flatbed so you can see what the "REAL WORLD" is really like. Going through training classes is good for a basic concept, but nothing like hands on to really know what to do.

What Earnie said. The learning curve is pretty steep, but the rewards are are there, too. You get to mix up the driving with some physical exercise and you have to think about how the rules apply to your specific load.
