If you’re into some of the more “mundane” aspects of the trucking industry, the Department Of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics has just released their “Pocket Guide To Transportation” for 2017, available online, as a .pdf, or as a mobile app.
It boils down all the major statistical points of the transportation industry, or the moving of goods and people, such as quantity, safety, demand, employment, etc.
While there may not be any new revelations of great significance, it also cover trends affecting the industry, and to no one’s surprise:
“The physical capacity of the U.S. transportation
system has not kept pace with growth in travel and
commerce. The resulting congestion and delays have
significant impacts on passengers and freight shippers.”
Shipper:
The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.
DOT:
Department Of Transportation
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
