It's an honest question. I would assume so but I have to ask. This person has years 25 to my knowledge of driving truck and due to cancer lost his right arm. I was just wondering if he would have an opportunity at a driver trainer or if his cdl days are over.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I know for class B and I would assume for A that they would have to hold a CDL and be able to operate the truck. If something happens they need to be able to operate it instead of the trainee.

I believe a bit more background is in order, so that we may answer the question succinctly.

Since a CDL permit holder must be accompanied by a CDL A holder, I'd say this person couldn't be a trainer or instructor. Maybe an instructor for the classroom portion at a cdl school, or maybe a yard/backing /pretrip instructor that didn't take students on road training.

Ok well here it is. This man drove truck for many years accident free. Than he had cancer that kept coming back and he lost his left arm. I was just wondering if he could still be a driver trainer or does he have to physically be able to drive the vehicle. ( I mean I'm sure he still could but legally I mean)
