Thinking About Roehl

Anyone here ever driven for/drives for Roehl? There is a terminal near me, and I am seriously looking to apply with them. The benefits (health insurance and dental) look to be reasonable but it doesn't say if that is weekly or bi-weekly premium. I have considered driving truck in the past but never took the leap. After 5 years in an office I am ready to shoot myself dealing with idiotic people who think that learning in a vacuum automatically means that's how things work in real life (engineers). Thoughts, comments, and advice are greatly appreciated.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Given the additional weekly costs listed here for certain situations, I'd assume those are weekly premiums. But call them to make sure. http://www.roehl.jobs/roehljobs/media/sitecontent/Documents/2017-New-Employee-Benefits-Summary-Student-Driver.pdf

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Welcome Lunchbox! We've had tons of people come through that have driven for Roehl and some current members too. Here are a bunch of forum conversations we've had that are tagged as mentioning Roehl:

We also have a ton of information on their company-sponsored program and a review of the company itself:

Roehl Transport Company Review

They're an excellent company. Great equipment, tons of home time options, and excellent training. So definitely one you should consider. But make sure you do your research on the other companies too. There are a lot of great choices. And keep in mind, it's not about finding a "good company" or weeding out the "bad ones". These major companies are all excellent places to get your career underway. It's simply a matter of choosing one that fits your preferences the best.

Go through our truck driver's career guide if you haven't already. It covers how to choose a school, how to choose a company, and a million other topics:

Truck Driver's Career Guide

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Company Sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
