How to Eat More Fruit and Vegetables Every Day: Cardiac College

Are you getting enough servings of fruit and vegetables each day? Canada’s Food Guide recommends that adult men and women receive seven servings of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis.

A new study has confirmed what your mother tried to tell you - that eating your fruits and vegetables will make you healthier. The more the better, with a whopping 10 servings per day being the optimum goal.

A portion counts as 80g (3oz) of fruit or veg - the equivalent of a small banana, a pear or three heaped tablespoons of spinach or peas.

With proper refrigeration, many fruits and vegetables also have a long shelf life, as well.

The study was a "catch-all" of 95 individual studies, pooling the eating habits of some two million people. Some of the conclusions follow:

Lower Cancer Risk:

  • Yellow vegetables
  • Green vegetables
  • Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, etc.)

Lower Risk Of Heart Disease & Stroke

  • Citrus fruits
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Salads
  • Cruciferous vegetables
  • Other green, leafy vegetables.

While it doesn't seem that anyone could be particularly surprised by the findings, it's always worth a share, to keep it front-and-center.
