Congratulations on the upgrade Chef!!!

If you don't mind checking a thread in the diary section titled Schneider Recruiter Visit... posted by Ed P. He asked a Schneider question I could not answer. Hopefully you can assist him.

Thanks! Good luck with your new pumpkin.

I just checked out that thread and i never even heard of that, maybe other OC offer that. I had my CDL going into it and unemployment paid for that so i didnt get reimbersed for anything and I also didnt have to sign a contract like that.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

That is what i thought about their stance on night driving as well, but some of the dedicated runs require a 7 am delivery time and the loads from the distrubution center werent usually ready until 3 am sometimes. So you have to drive at night. And as far as the bluetooth/headset use goes, it is a very stict no cell phine use, hands free device or not that they have in place while driving. You can use them while you are parked at in a safe place. People have lost their jobs over that and some recently while pulling into the OC while on them. We even had to turn our phones off during the day while we were on duty while we were in class.

As a new driver, that's going to be for the best anyway. Talking on the phone, even hands-free, can still be a distraction, and from what I've learned Schneider is real big on safety. Although that can probably be said about most companies! Do they follow the road training up with additional testing, or after the training has been completed, it's five more days in the classroom, and wait for your assigned truck?

Yeah you do one week with the TE and once you get back you have 4 -5 days of classes again as well as a final evaluation. A lot of computer stuff to do, qualcomm and trip planning, eta's, etc.

Dedicated Run:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

Congratulations! I've been with Schneider myself going on seven months months now and I couldn't be happier. When I look back on my first couple of weeks on my own now, it seemed that whatever could go wrong did go wrong. I was missing exits, making wrong turns , it took forever to find a spot to drop a trailer. I remember talking to my DBL that first week and I thought I was about to be fired and he says to me " Dave, your doing great keep up the good work". Whatever happens don't get discouraged, after a while, things will start to place.

Haha you just summed up my day today, lol. A couple other Schneider drivers did help me out today, so that was surprising. They just said hey i was there at one point too. I want to be that guy saying that to a rookie driver someday too.

I'm meeting my te mon at the tunkannuk yard at noon. His name is Mark Nett I believe. He has over a million miles. Talked to him last night and seems like a nice guy. I'm pumped!

What are you running? otr , regional , dedicated ?

I'm going otr. I wanna do that for a year and see where I stand after that. Thats the plan anyway. :)

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Ah nice, one of my classmates i believe had him as well, if not him it was someone who parks at the same location. You will be good though, just ask questions and listen to what they say.

As for what I am doing, i took the otr route as well to see how it goes and to get experience, but i must say after running a dedicated route that my TE had, i wouldnt mind doing that at all, lol.
