Monday was the first full day with driving and backing. Today we are on the interstate and driving through the best congestion Lafayette has to offer. And then practicing backing the rest of the day. I can't wait to get my CDL -A. And hit the road!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

Congratulations Holli...

It is all so exciting isn't it? Let me tell you that you will experience so many emotions when starting this career, that it can be overwhelming at times. Be prepared for days that you just want to crawl in a corner and cry. There are going to be frustrating days when you'll think I just can't get this down, and there will be days of exhilaration and excitement. It can be a field day for emotions out here, and sometimes that can really drain you. Stay the course, keep your eye on the prize. Remember, slow and steady wins the race.

I have every confidence you can do this, but just want you to be prepared for the roller coaster ride of emotions that we all experienced when getting started at this. Getting that CDL A is really just the first step in a lengthy process, but it is all worth the effort, and you will be rewarded many times over as you continue throughout your career.

Again, Congratulations, and keep up the good work!

That emotional thing....Old School is right!

Somewhere in the middle of school (now I was working full time and going to school full time, so that DID play a factor) I drove home crying almost every night. Now I'm a girl, but a tough girl and I don't normally cry over much, but this I did. I was convinced I couldn't do it and wouldn't succeed and didn't have it in me.

I said I would quit every night and went back the next night every time. It paid off. I got my CDL first try and I never dreamed THAT would happen! Even right up to the last day of practice!

Good luck. And stick with it! You will do something that you can be VERY proud of!

I drove home crying almost every night. Now I'm a girl, but a tough girl and I don't normally cry over much, but this I did.

I remember after the second week with my trainer, him telling me that he was surprised that I was still going strong. He said that most of his trainees would break down crying be the end of the second week and go home. Of course he was a really difficult trainer, and he was just added stress on top of the already stressful rigors of training for a new career in truck driving.
