Are there any companies out there with rider program where the rider doesn't have to be your legal spouse?

I think most allow riders over the age of 10-12. If they are under 18, you need to show proof of guardianship. Otherwise anyone over 18 can ride with you.

Take a look at Trucking Company Reviews look at the companies you are interested in and go from there..

• One child, stepchild, foster-child, niece, nephew or grandchild 4 years of age or younger, provided they are accompanied by the non-driving spouse or adult

• One child, stepchild, foster-child, niece, nephew or grandchild 5 – 18 years of age, without the non-driving spouse or adult

• One adult 19 years or older

Swift too allows riders. I think the minimum age is 14 and they can be a friend or a family member, doesn't matter.

Freymiller has a rider policy.

Add Schneider to the list of companies allowing passengers, doesn't have to be a spouse, just of age. And driver needs 6 mos. safe driving record before allowed to take on a passenger.

Wolding allows riders, requires 6 months accident free driving, children must be related. (I think required age is 14 and up). Adults do not have to be a spouse. Wolding doesn't charge to have a rider either.

One of the things of note - most companies do not allow a CDL LICENSED DRIVER to be your rider. Interesting fact - but they're concerned that someone might let the rider drive.

Not sure which companies enforce this rule - but many I've heard of do.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
