It's been awhile since I've been on here. A lot of personal things been going on. My hypo question is if someone got in the industry today how many years does he have before self driving truck come in full time? What was Trump meaning about trucker's per diem?

Per Diem:

Getting paid per diem means getting a portion of your salary paid to you without taxes taken out. It's technically classified as a meal and expense reimbursement.

Truck drivers and others who travel for a living get large tax deductions for meal expenses. The Government set up per diem pay as a way to reimburse some of the taxes you pay with each paycheck instead of making you wait until tax filing season.

Getting per diem pay means a driver will get a larger paycheck each week but a smaller tax return at tax time.

It will be a very long time before autonomous trucks are taking our jobs. I didn't hear Trump's speech, however I wouldn't worry to much about that. It takes congress to long to act.

Here's the Wikipedia on autonomous cars. That experiment started back in the 1920s and those still haven't taken over. There's no way autonomous trucks take over before cars. It will be a while

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Talking about driverless trucks is like talking about the Boogeyman. Strikes fear in the hearts of some drivers, but nothing will come of it.

Taking about cutting per diem is a lot of hot air. Strikes fear in the hearts of some drivers who understands it, but nothing will come of it. Incidentally, per diem is a tax issue for anyone who travels for business, not just truckers.
