Welcome aboard Nicholas!
Listen, it makes absolutely no difference where a company is located. Trucking companies hire based on where they haul freight, not where they're located. In 15 years I never once drove for a company that even had a terminal or drop yard in my home state. Didn't matter. As long as they run freight near your home they know they can get you home when it's time to so they'll hire from that area.
All of our Company-Sponsored Training Program Reviews list the hiring zones for each company. As long as they hire from your area you're good to go.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.
The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.
If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.
Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.
Thanks for the fast reply. That is good to know that they are far reaching like that. I had thought they were only working around who was local in terms to the company.
I am just starting out and currently working on my permit to get my CDL A but I was wondering if there was any Company-sponsored CDL training offered close to or here in NY state. I saw on the site a listing of different companies but most are further west. Any help would be greatly appreciated, guys.
Nicholas,
As Brett said, it does not matter where the headquarters are, as long as they run freight through your area.
I drive for Prime, and they have a terminal in Pittston PA. Just because their main terminal is in Springfield MO, does not mean they won't hire you. I live in VA and have been driving for them since Oct 2011.
Any questions, let us know. Will be happy to answer them for you or give you advice if that is what you want/need.
Ernie
