Uniondale, NY is on Long Island. I have been there twice, and each time, it has made me question why I decided to drive a truck.

There are 2 docks (GM- left, Grocery-right) by the black dots. There is a concrete wall next to the red line. To say it is a very tight space, is an understatement.

The setup is key. How would you handle it?

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

I was recently at our SAPA plant in Cressona, PA and had to help a Knight dry van driver out of a tight situation he had gotten himself into. When it was all over with and we had him safely back out of a bad situation he had this to say to me, "I've always heard that flat-bed drivers don't know how to back. Well, you taught me a thing or two tonight. I don't think I could even park my empty trailer where you guys are dropping yours here at this place! I guess I won't be repeating that silly little saying about flat bed drivers anymore."

SAP:

Substance Abuse Professional

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

Dry Van:

A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.

I fell asleep before I could upload my other pictures. These are a few 3D shots of the dock, and the cheat sheet we have for every location.

Next to the grocery dock, is a ramp, with a very mean post that has taken out a few unwary dot bumpers. The wall, is painted with various truck colors. I should mention, that both times, I drove a 48' trailer. I am glad I didn't have a 53' to squeeze in there.
