So the time has come for me to take my CDL test. And I’m not too worried about it. Because I’m trying to calm myself because I know if I get nervous I’ll fail. I witness that last week when 3 students fail because of nerves. One shouldn’t have because the tester gave her 13 points when she only had 5. Anyways. The only thing I’m concern about is my parallel parking and my road test because they’re two tight “ island turns” and I don’t want to hit the curb and get an auto fail. Everything else I feel confident about. I’ll be taking it in Richmond va with swift. Any tips for the official test !

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Here's two thoughts that might help. Just imagine the examiner is a friend you are driving home. He (or she) is just giving you directions to their house.

As for the turns, first, I know it's almost impossible to describe your turn situation. But generally, drive your tractor (your front part) in as long /far out/ wide a path as you can, allowing for where you are supposed to end up. Your back end will then follow the best path behind you.

Thanks Errol ! I can’t wait to get it over with. There’s 3 of us going to dmv and the out of state people ( which is me) go first. And I was hoping to get one more out of state so I can watch. But the sooner I go the sooner I can head home for a few days. I can’t wait to meet you guys at a truck stop !

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
