Don, typically at a private school like Big Scott attended, they will put you on some back roads first. They may have you maneuvering around at a large industrial park or something like that. Then the following day they will get you on some interstates. Things move quickly.

This is true. The private school I attended had a few blocks that the aviation students used to use and, since it was considered private property, we technically did not need a CLP to drive as long as we had a licensed instructor in the 2nd seat. After a week or so, we were on 2 lane back roads, then eventually on a 4 lane highway. Never on an interstate as the closest interstate from Ottumwa is I-80. But US-34 and 63 are essentially Iowa interstates.

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.
