Welcome aboard Tara!
Actually, I don't think any companies would go by the date you were charged. Everything I've ever read said they go by the conviction date.
That's a real bummer I'm afraid. Thank God it's not a felony but any drug or alcohol related offenses are at the top of the list of disqualifying factors for trucking companies. I'm afraid you're going to have a very difficult time getting a shot, at least from any of the major companies. You might have to go through Craigslist and find a small company or owner operator that's willing to give you a shot. I'm not saying don't apply at the major companies. But in all honesty I wouldn't get my hopes up.
I wish the news was better.
An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.
Yeah, hate to break it to you but I doubt any of the large companies will want anything to do with you. But definitely don't give up your hopes. Apply to all the companies and speak with their recruiting department. It won't be easy but that's just about all you can do.
And like Brett said, try to see if a small company will take you on Craigslist.
Your goal is to get hired with a company. Any company! So don't be picky. If someone will give you a chance then take the opportunity. Doesn't matter the pay just take it. Be a safe driver for that company for a year and you'll start seeing other companies be interested in you. Good luck.
You will have to be completely done with your time/sentence before a company will look at you. And yes they go by your conviction date.
I know a guy that was charged with an assult charge and discharged it in 1991. He applied for a few companies. He got 3 denined emails because of the charge not the date.. So do major companies go by charge instead of dates? Merry Christmas JC
So do major companies go by charge instead of dates?
Indeed some companies will have lifetime bans on certain things like felonies, DUI's, reckless driving, any drug or alcohol related charges - things like that. It's all on a company-by-company basis.
For anyone with a felony or DUI you'll certainly find some companies that won't go near you. Others certainly will. It just takes a lot of determination to stick with the process and keep applying like crazy until you find someone that will give you a chance.
Driving Under the Influence
Tara, after you get everything done with the court, as far as restitution, court fines, fees, probation, etc...you may be able to petition the court to have the charge expunged from your record. Your reason would be that it is inhibiting your ability to be gainfully employed, and it has been so long ago...Its worth a shot, and any attorney can write the letter for you. Alot of it will depend on the state laws. I know some states will seal the record on some charges, ...but you will still have to tell any company that you apply to that it was there, and now its not..
