do I need to undergo a sleep study or anything like that?

I wouldn't concern myself with that. Prime will evaluate your likelihood of needing a CPAP during your orientation time. If they think you need to be tested they will set it up. They will consider your BMI (body mass index) and your neck measurement as indicators. If your neck circumference is greater than 17 inches you might be tested.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

most people that are required to do a sleep study have a neck size over 17 inches for men, 16 (?) For women and/or a BMI of 35. Theres also a short questionaire you need to answer that may also prompt them to believe you have sleep apnea. Honestly hearing about the complications later in life for untreated sleep apnea prompted me to contact my private doctor about getting me in for a sleep test which came back positive. I actually go to pickup my CPAP machine tomorrow. My BMI fit the requirement but the dr that administered my physical didnt send me for it.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

@ Old School & Rob T:

Thanks for the info. My BMI is only 28.0 (overweight, but not too high) and my neck is 14.5, so I think I'm good then. Been wondering about this for a while now, thanks.

Hi and welcome CK! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my story so far. It has definitely been an adventure. lol

As for the CPAP , Old School and Rob gave good info. I do know that Prime has a sleep lab right at Campus Inn so it’s convenient. With what you said, I don’t think it will be an issue for you. I was diagnosed three years ago and already had my machine when I was accepted to Prime so all I had to do was bring my machine and send Prime a 30-day compliance report. They monitor my compliance now remotely. That’s a whole lot better than me trying to get to a terminal every month and take my machine to them.

Good luck and if I can be of any help just give a yell.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Hey Kim, You started out with a bang for sure... It goes that way sometimes... thankfully not all the time, lol. Thanks for the kind words about my truck, I just like nice things... I’m actually in your neck of the woods running up I-77 to grab I-64 at Charleston to head to Chicago. You have had your share of challenges, but you have done great, keep up the great work

If I had still been on home time I would have brought you a home cooked meal. You were practically at my back door when you went through there, you passed within three miles of my house. lol

This running solo stuff is hard! shocked.png

I went through Charleston for 3 or 4 years on the way from Buffalo to Tennessee before I discovered 19 was finished. :)

Story of my life Kim... a day late and dollar short🤭 Thank you for the kindness though👍 Running solo can be very demanding at times. I picked up in Grrensboro NC yesterday and am unloading in Gurnee IL right now. Couple long days, but well worth it. I did it to myself though.... I’m delivering a day early, but I have a plan or scheme, lol and its working beautifully. Stay safe in your travels
