I have read posts from quite a few members saying that the High Road CDL Training Program was all that they needed and had no problems at all. I feel very confident in the written part of the testing for the permit. I am now concentrating on the pre-trip. I am studying that in sections as one poster recommended to someone that was having a hard time with it. So yea... :-)

CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
- Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
- Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Pre-trip Inspection:
A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.
Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

On the pretrip, yes learning it in sections is key but also try to follow the same sequence every time. Find a flow if that works for you. It was huge for me in remembering each component. I passed with no points then it all went to hell in a hay basket in backing & road testing. Learn the acronyms, PMS - property mounted & secured. CBB - not cracked bent or broken. ABC - no abrasions bulges or cuts. WTDR - worn torn or dry rotted.

The High Road would have been enough for me to pass, though I did purchase a $4 app for my phone, but there was nothing there that wasn't in the High Road.
I do wish I had read the NY manual once, as there was stuff in there I had not seen (weird questions, wish I could remember), but I was easily able to figure out the answers they wanted. I passed CDL permit tests plus tanker and HM, in the high 90s for each, I only missed a few questions total.
