Hello Dwayne, and welcome to our forum!

Really any of the major players in the trucking business are great places to not only get started, but they're great companies to make a career at. There is a lot of nonsense from disgruntled truckers on the internet that is generally best to ignore. All of our moderators here are making great money and enjoying life at some of the largest trucking companies available.

What you want to ask yourself is...

1) What type of freight do I want to haul?

2) What area of the country do I want to run?

3) What benefits are important to me?

Those three questions can narrow down your search. The bigger companies who hire newly licensed drivers are much better equipped to help a rookie get started at this, and many of them make special efforts at helping them get accustomed to the job.

Here's a link to an excellent podcast that may help you understand better how these big companies are the some of the best places to both get started and make a career.

Are The Big Companies Only Starter Companies?

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Also, if you haven't read much here on our site, these are excellent resources for someone just getting started.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hi Dwayne, if you're attending NETTS I assume you must be in the CT or MA area. If so, you'll likely have your choice of any of the major companies. You'll probably even have a few recruiters come to your school. I urge you to keep an open mind to all options before committing to any company.

Good luck!

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
