Hi, this is tarheel59. I have been a member of TT for several years. I don't post very much. I have been postponing truck driving as a career change. I had been waiting to see if a position at my present company of 10 years would come open. The position came open for operations manager in my present company. Company decided to hire outside the company to replace retiring operations manager. I did not get the job. It turned out who you know not what you know! So I am back to looking at starting a trucking career. Some of you may know that my situation is not straight forward. I have a valid Class A CDL which I kept up for almost 10 years now But, never used it. I did go through a truck driving school. So I have a CDL A that does me no good. I drive buses and vans for a transportation company and some of the buses do require a CDL. I am just starting to look at companies again. I am 59 and not getting any younger lol. Thanks for listening. God Bless

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I remember you. Jump in with CFI. You would have to start from the bottom. They may let you take a refresher course. They pay for all your training. We have a drop yard in Charlotte and pleanty of freight in the area to easily get you home. Good luck.

Just started applying at some companies. Would really like something regional. But, may have to go 48 state or at least east of Mississippi River. Big Scott haven't forgotten you. 😁

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

I talked with JB Hunt many months ago and everything they had was easy of I-35. Not what I was looking for but may be a place for your needs.

I'm in a very similar situation as well. I originally earned my CDL over 20 years ago, and even drove for CRST for a short time (less than a year) before coming off the road to deal with some personal stuff. Fast forward a couple decades and tons of consideration later, I'm finally in a place where I'm ready to take a much needed break from IT to answer to the calling of the road. I renewed my medical certification last year and re-upped my Class-E back to a Class-A CDL and put in my full application with Knight. I'm set up and going to what they call DQP or Driver Qualification (Orientation) next week, on March 4th. I'm planning to write up a new, more detailed post on my experience so far for anybody looking for updated info on going to Knight Transportation.
