CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Pre Hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Congratulations Tony!

You can put yourself at the head of the class by going ahead and working your way through the High Road Training Program. I can't begin tell you how many people have benefited greatly from this training program. As far as my experience went, I never even had to crack open that boring state CDL manual. If you go through this program you can easily go ahead and obtain your driving permit before you start school, and often times that will get you in the truck learning to maneuver it around before anyone else in your class.

We've also got a lot of valuable info available to you in our Trucker's Career Guide.

It's great to have you on board, and if you have any questions we'd be glad to try and answer them for you. Don't be bashful, there are no dumb questions, and we enjoy helping folks get their hands on the steering wheel of a big old American Big Rig.

Yes, one thing i've notice about TT is and I catch myself doing it all the time. You know that one friend you have that has one subject he is overly excited about? well the guys and gals here at TT are that one friend many over and our subject is 80,000lbs coal burning hunks of shinyness with loud air horns (I got into trucking for the air horns) and the only stupid question is the one you DIDN'T ask. Only one way to learn buddy and trust me, when I started I wish I would of known about this site.open that laptop and fire those fingers up because there are a lot of questions new drivers should ask these old school drivers. learning from a driver that drove back in the day is the best, my trainer was a 20+ year vet and buddy let me tell you. It shows on the road in how to handle your self and those around you. ASK AWAY!!!!

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Thanks all, I have driven a semi before as I hauled grain and livestock (hogs) for a previous employer but I was exempt from having to have a cdl under farm exemption. .Also my step dad was a trucker his whole life so I went with him whenever I could .I have always loved trucking first truck I rode in was a cab over. .only reason I waited so long to pull the trigger on truckingtrucking was my family but I'm divorced and my kids are almost grown so now time for dad to do a job he wants to do! I have done the physical labor jobs for over 15 years and have had back surgery and 2 knee surgery to show for it so enough is enough of that crap..my past injury don't bother me any so I'm ready to get r done
