So if you are a vet and are interested in which company has the va apprenticeship program you can go to www.va.gov and search for military apprenticeship, it will give you a search tool to type in the company name.

Basically it is your housing stipend from your GI Bill. And the pay rate is based on the company headquarters and not where you live. Rates can vary greatly . Ie McElroy is a 1yr program and starts at around 1200 , and TMC is closer to 1500 and is a 2 year program. The highest I saw was Ryder inc and theirs was 2346.

You should NOT base your decision directly off of this , but if you need a tie breaker, this might help.

A little update on me, not eligible to drive until I sign out on leave at the end of April , so I have been doing my research I have talked to a few companies recently and they all are fine companies. Transforce sounded great, they don’t make you team while training, the pay is fair but their home time didn’t match my current preference.

A friend of mine is a trainer for Werner and said it was possible to request him as my trainer when I am ready to go, just to give him a couple weeks heads up so he can have an empty truck. I have served with him in the military and have spent a lot of time in stressful situations, I know he is a straight shooter, and pays attention to detail. Other than that Werner matches a lot of my needs with home time, and pay. So it’s looking I have made my choice and am gonna drive for big blue. I can’t wait to get started!

Important to note is that the VA apprenticeship program draws funds from your GI bill. Just keep that in mind if you intend on using it for college classes or what have you.

Also that monthly pay out or BAH is based on the location of the company terminal registered with the VA. It will decrease by 20% every 6 months for up to two years depending on the company.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Lol. Still good points JuiceBox

Yeah it does come from the education benefits so it’s not free money. But if you are like me and don’t plan on college, might as well use it while you can.

The reason I posted is that a lot of recruiters aren’t exactly sure what the rates are. The VA website will tell you exactly. I have seen a lot of confusion as to how it works.

I am like you, I did the same but with Melton. Also started working a week after signing out on leave. I can't stress how great of an advantage that was for me.

I went to a private CDL school which was paid for with my GI bill and I was reimbursed for it by Melton. My first year driving and I was having money thrown at me from all directions. Second year, I actually had to go out and earn it. Third year, it's pretty much just routine now. Goodluck out here brother, I'm sure you will do well.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
