Dezl 780 Questions

Hello. Im new to the industry and I am thoroughly aware that there is no substitute for a map and a pen. That said I have a Garmin Dezl 780 to help me in my adventures but have a few questions about the unit. First one is I am using the smart link to connect to my phone so basically there are 3 connections to the phone, smartlink, Bluetooth and WiFi. Do I need all 3 running at the same time or can I shut off WiFi and only use that for updates? Second is when driving and there is a traffic update can I make that update automatically minimize after a short period of time so I can go back to trip date without having to touch the X on the screen? Lastly any advice on the mount, the magnet is super strong but on bumpy roads it starts to tilt itself where the ball meets the powered mount. Thanks everyone much appreciated. Darren

Bumping this in case anyone has this particular unit.

Have you looked in the owners manual to see if it talks about that?

Only had short experience with that unit. 1st co-driver bought 1, well swapped for it after he bought the RMcN. Which was a pain trying to use, so he went back into Love's n traded models.(sure he lost $ on that lol)

Anyways, I dunno why do you got 3 other things connected? lol

We just set it and forget it thru each load. Hassle free, and it had the suction mount to the windshield again, trouble free on any roads good or bad very sturdy

This last co had a tom-tom, which after awhile it got working better than at first. Was easy also to set up and use. Sometimes it wanted to reroute us, or it would slowly catch up to route at last minute to avoid taking the wrong exit/interchange on the freeways....

Now going solo, I think I will buy the Garmin 780 unit myself, once out there again

The smart link goes thought your bluetooth, the only time you need the wifi on is for updates ( I do not recomend doing it via wifi) or if you dont have a bluetooth. Are you saying that the traffic update takes up your hole screen or just the right side about 1/4 of the screen. What ever tab you opened last should be the one you see if you close the traffic update but it dose not close down the traffic feature, just sets it to run in the back ground or when the traffic changes agen. I have been playing around with he ball it is really bad when it is fully extended to the top the more centered you can get mount and the ball the better it seems to ride. How much it moves depends on how hot it is. I have not figured out a way to keep it from tilting down. I think it might have todo with the weight of the 780. I think the smaller one might do better.

Ok so for the 3 connections I figured out. One is WiFi which I turned off since it’s not needed. The other two connections are one for Bluetooth on phone and one for smartlink app. Looking at my Bluetooth settings on phone it lists the dezl 2 times in the list of connections. I believe this is proper working condition. As for the traffic updates it just pops up on the right side of the screen covering my trip data. The only way to make it minimize is to actually tap the X on the window and it goes away. Not safe for driving IMHO. I’m still playing with this and researching it as instructions say nothing about it. As for the ball mount I have read that once you have it in a position you like, a dab of crazy glue does the trick. Sad that it’s this way to get it to stay put though.
