Hey everyone, just bought a new truck and I am completely lost on what insurance to get. Some insurance companies say they can give me lower premiums, others say they can use my telematics data to make me safer on the road, others say they have the most comprehensive coverage, and others say they can do quicker than average claims driven by data where I don't have to call anyone on the phone. Was wondering if y'all could let me know where y'all get your information on truck insurance and let me know which of these factors/features I should value the most or if there is something else I should be looking for?

Hi Carlo,

For me the insurance rate comes first. Then, the quickness of the service that they provide. There had better be no delays and broken promises from the start. If I can't get a hold of my insurance agent in one day, or they ignore me then I would change companies immediately because they have a lot of responsibility on their end. Every year at renewal, it's their responsibility to submit proof of insurance to the FMCSA. They also have to submit proof to any broker that request it (which should be done within 10-15min). Remember, you'll be filling out new carrier packets for the brokers and they need the proof of insurance promptly because you won't be able to take the load until they have all your info.

Make sure you have the minimums which is 1 million auto liability and 100k on cargo.

Hope this helps.

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle

FMCSA:

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.

What Does The FMCSA Do?

  • Commercial Drivers' Licenses
  • Data and Analysis
  • Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement
  • Research and Technology
  • Safety Assistance
  • Support and Information Sharing

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Carlo, I'm a trucking insurance agent who just found this forum. My first couple questions to you would be as follows:

* What are you going to haul? * Where are you hauling it to (radius)? * Do you operate under your own authority?

I can tell you I will do anything and everything for you under the sun, but until an agent knows about what your business plan is it's unlikely they can come up with a game plan for you. As Sid V. said, responsiveness is key. Access to a variety of carriers is another.

Most important thing IMO is to develop a relationship and take note of the type of questions agents ask. I can tell you all day about the wonders I can do, but if they don't fit your business it does nobody any good. I have to contact a prospect this evening and tell them I can't provide anything better than what they currently have. I hate doing it, but hopefully down the road they appreciate that I didn't BS them.
