Does anybody else think this is more unsafe, as in a possible 17 hour day vice a 14 hour day?
I see it as a good thing. The 14-hour rule has always been foolish, in my opinion. If a driver wants to maximize their productivity, they are forced to fit all of their driving in that 14-hour window, even while fatigued to the point of becoming dangerous.
Having the ability to pause the 14-hour clock long enough for a nap, yet still being able to resume driving out your 11 should greatly increase productivity and alertness, if used wisely.
Of course you'll still have those yahoos who don't use the break to rest as they should, leading to the 17-hour day versus a 14. No different from the driver who only sleeps 4 out of his 10. Unfortunately you just can't legislate common sense into people.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
I like the concept. However I agree idiots will screw it up too. There have been many times I wished I could stop and grab a 3 hour nap then get through a major city after rush hour. If used properly it will work well.
FFS, why don’t they just adopt Canadian HoS and be done with it.
