Hi my name is Sveto Apostolovski,

I am new and would like to know if there are any mentors or people who have been in the industry. I am looking for some guidance. I know in life if you have a coach or teacher you will move forward. I had a teacher and was not the best in teaching students. I have my CDL A license, thank god I pushed myself. You get done with school and its's lonely trying to get job or advise. I was a business owner of deli for 22 years and food industry was destroyed in couple months Covid 19. I enjoy the freedom of being your own boss in trucking, If there is any mentors or teachers you recommend, please contact me. I will respect your time and advise. I will build owner operator business and help others grow in there journey. Key is to surround yourself with others that are already there and doing it.

Thank you

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

Do you have any experience as a truck driver? I highly recommend you get atleast a couple years worth of experience as a company driver before considering owning your own business. Profit margins are extremely small in this industry while the risk of bankruptcy is high. Insurance cost alone will bury you.

In trucking you're left alone for the most part. Many former business owners have said they feel as if they're self employed due to nobody looking over their shoulder. A successful driver will rarely hear from their company other than being told where they're picking up, dropping off and what appointments are. The rest is for you to do as you wish. At the same time help is only a phone call away to resolve all your issues. We have members here making over $80,000 dollars a year without the hassle of running a business. There's even a couple that are around $100,000 a year! Ignore the lies you see advertised about O/O making 250,000 a year. That is before they take into account their expenses. One of our moderators, PJ, is an O/O and said after all expenses he makes about what he did his rookie year. There are some O/O that do much better than a company driver but you typically need to get into a niche market such as super size loads. It takes a long time to be qualified for that.
