My husband and I have been talking a lot about driving teams lately. A question came up that I have not been able to find out if it is possible. Is there a company or has there been cases where new team drivers have been able to go through over the road training on the same truck with the same trainer? I know most companies won't do this but I was wondering if anyone knows of it happening.

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Welcome to the Trucking Truth site, Candice.

From all that I know, to my knowledge there are no training companies that will train you both on the same truck. Most training scenarios are one trainer with one student.

Depending on the company you pick, training time can be anywhere from a couple weeks to several months.

I had asked a C.R. England trainer that was helping their student back into the dock at my DC about their 3 bunk trucks. I was told that they were used for this exact scenario, or when you find someone you'd like to team with at school.

CR England has many successful drivers but they do start you out on the lower end of pay. Prove yourself and your pay will go up. If you guys are willing to be separated for training (3 or 4 weeks usually) you'll have far more options that pay better.

Married couples are highly desired candidates and you can make some really good money running team.

When I went to Schneider back in 2018, some of their trainers trained two people at a time. But their OTR training is only 5-7 days while the other two weeks will be spent at the terminal/yard/around town.

When I trained with them, I was paired with another student with a single trainer. The trainer slept in the truck while me and the other guy was put into a hotel room every night. He split our driving time as evenly as possible.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

It sounds like Kearsey is correct. In addition to having previously considered joining their teaming team myself, I just gleaned this 4-star review of Covenant on indeed.com:

"Good starter company especially for couples! They were willing to train me and my wife with out separating us. Dedicated routes are best and easy to obtain especially if your in California." --12/7/20

Dedicated Route:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."

Keep in mind that "training" and "schooling" are not synonymous. A "training" company may take in new CDL holders but not have a "school" for you to get the CDL. So be very sure what you are asking.

Do you go with your permit or with a CDL? That is a big difference

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
