My ideal career I'm looking for is as a garbage truck driver for waste management or another waste disposal company, and I have applied for many different positions, but they all say they want someone with at least a year of driving experience. I've been approved as a school bus driver for my area and I am wondering if that would be relevant experience they are looking for?

Also, hello everyone, I am new to these forums and this is my first post. Sorry I wasn't sure if these forums are for CDL-B jobs or not.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Welcome to the Trucking Truth site, BILL.

We try and answer all truck-based questions, although most on here drive Class A rigs.

If I were you, I'd be asking about the experience necessary question at your perspective employer such as Waste Management. Any commercial driving would have to be a plus, though.

Depending on where you are driving a school bus would be relevant for combat experience....

LOL! The Army trained me to drive a 53pax bus in Berlin, Germany. At the time I thought THAT was combat experience.

I drove School bus for 3 years before I upgraded. The most common school buses are between 46' - 48' in length depending on how many children passengers. So a school bus is a bit longer than your average trash truck. You just have to make sure you obtain a Class " B" cdl license with air break, School and Passenger endorsements.
