I'm currently a real estate investor and I'm looking into starting a trucking company. I have a CDL and currently working for a company for the past 3 month so far. I'm learning a lot about the industry but I need some guidance on getting my first truck running. I plan on buying a truck, hiring a driver and leasing with Schneider National since they have a lot of loads and allow you to pick which one. I got a quote from Progressive for about $4,000 a month which is ridiculous based out of New Jersey. I want to have my own authority but the insurance is killing me since I don't have at least 2 years experience which most companies are looking for to insure you.

The truck that I have in mind is a freightliner or a Volvo automatics 2011 or older. What kind of engine should I look out for?

Do I have the driver as a 1099 or W2? Please explain your choice.

Apart from Schneider or JB hunt, where can I get some good consistent loads from in the northeast?

What would be a good roadside service so when the truck breaks down?

What should be the starting pay for the driver and also when do I give him or her a raise? I heard paying the driver a percentage is the best way to go.

If you can provide more info, it will be appreciated.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

This is one of dumbest posts I've seen this week.

Where does this one rank?

I cannot recall seeing so many BS posts from one member in under four days membership.

Is this the most recent incarnation of Todd?

You are probably not cut out for this from the questions you are asking. First of all if you lease onto a company you can get your insurance through them, which is far cheaper. Schnieder pays 65 percent of the linehaul to you. You will be hard put to find a decent driver with what you will be able to pay, when they can go directly to the company themself and get a benifit package.

Getting your own authority gets to be a complicated process, starting with you showing proof of insurance. Your insurance rate could be even higher depending on the driving record of your driver.

I’m not saying you can’t do what your describing, but it will be very expensive. You need to really take a harder look and spend some time learning the industry.

Linehaul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

Aren’t you the same Di D that had the bumper ripped off your truck?

Dude what you’re trying to do is leech off the industry. You want to own a trucking company? Get your own authority and insurance and hire a driver that way. You’ll find it hard to do even then but there’s no legitimate reason for someone to work for you when they could just work directly for Schneider or get their own truck through them and not have a middle man.

Whatever you heart desires Di D. You could just use the money from the lawsuit you’ll get for your bumper getting ripped off!!!!
