Hello drivers, I was just looking for a little help with my decision on a flatbed company. As some know, I am currently working at Knight in the flatbed division. Knight has been my starter company and now with 9 months experience, I think its time for me to try another company. I will try and stay for a full year but it wouldn't hurt to look for my next company now.

So far I have looked into a company called Klapec aka "KTC" in Reno, PA, ATS and Wylie. Wylie stands out to me because they are strictly a flatbed company. I have spoken to drivers from both ATS and Wylie and have gotten more positive feed back from drivers that work for Wylie. Also in my research I have come across a company called Lonestar based in TX...

Just wondering if anyone has anymore info on these companies and also if there are smaller companies or other mega companies I have missed in my search... Any response would be greatly appreciated, thanks and stay safe drivers!

Have you sent off for a copy of your DAC from Hireright? I would be interested if Knight had anything on there.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

Small outfit out of Hickory Nc, Gaines Motor Express. They hire out of Pa if thats your location. I see a lot of good press on them.

Why are you looking?

Although you started with Knight, I’d suggest they are way more than just a starter company. This is true for most companies offering Paid CDL Training Programs. I’ve never bought-into that term; starter company.

Regardless, what are you looking for that Knight cannot offer?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

GTown, if he’s looking to expand his horizons in open deck, Knight really doesn’t offer much in that regard being that their entire division really revolves around Hydro. Of the 3 companies mentioned, I would go with Wylie. They pull a wide variety of loads as well as some oversized experience as well as a large glass division. A former member here was with Wylie for 3 years and only left because the long term goal was heavy haul and he’s now with a very good company that offers that very thing.

Fair enough.

Boyd Bros is a good flatbed company with a substantial "east of the Mississippi" footprint.

Have you considered Maverick?

Also, as others have stated it might be helpful to know what you do and don't like about Knight and flatbed generally.

Although I have only work for Prime, I got some ideas about the other flatbed companies from talking to other drivers.

I actually spoke to a recruiter from Fraley and Schilling about their home every weekend opportunities.

Thinking about what PackRat had asked, I'm wondering if previous incidents may effect your opportunities. I don't know if any of those are on your DAC , but I would find out before I put myself out there. If it is the case, you may want to ride things out.

Thank you all for your input. Pack and Davy, upon reading your responses I have requested a copy of my DAC report. I think it said 5-7 business days. I know for certain one incident will be on there. I have spoken with Wiley, Maverick and Kaplec trucking. I explained in detail my two incidents and they said it shouldn't be a problem, hopefully that is the truth...

G'town, what Robert B said is the reason for leaving Knight. I would like to expand in this industry. Getting into heavy haul is my main objective, I am only wasting time staying with Knight. Also with this dedicated account I find myself getting lazy. I am lacking with my trip planning because I have been to many of these places multiple times. I see myself forming bad habits and I have to remind myself not to be so comfortable doing this job.. Not to mention, my settlement being habitually incorrect is very frustrating.....
