Hello All, I have had my CDL for about 5 years now. I acquired my license for the purpose of volunteering for a church ministry. We drove a school bus into the city to pick up people who were not able to drive themselves. These people were new to the area and were assisted in getting housing, jobs, driver training, starting their own church, etc. However, this ministry has ended. This forum may not be the place for me as you are all professionals. However, I have since retired from my regular job and now considering driving part time. Any suggestions? Thank you, Richard C.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hello and welcome to the forum, Richard.

Can you provide a little more information? What state do you live in? What kind of hours/days do you consider part time (e.g. 4hr days, 5 days a week)?

Hello RealDiehl, Thank you for your response. I am licensed in New York and live in the Albany/Schenectady/Troy area. I have a Class B with school bus and passenger endorsements.

I was considering 10-15 hours per week.

Im assuming you intend to drive with your Class B, I would check for maybe a relief driver position for busses with possibly senior citizens homes, churches, community centers and such if you are looking for something that sparse. If you are thinking of upgrading to Class A, you would need to go through either company sponsored school and training or go through a private CDL school and get hired and go through training. Neither path would be part time, especially that few hours per week to begin with, nor most likely for some time. Consider that a day for us is 11 hours of driving within 14 hours of on duty, that would put you perhaps 1 day a week, if that.

Thank you, Moderator! That is good advice. I will look into the possibility of a relief driver position nearby. Wow your days are long. I will pray for safe travels for you. Richard
