BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Yes i have im about 1/4 of the way done. i havnt been able to work on it much these last few days because im getting ready to come back to the states but as soon as im back i should have enough free time to work on it. im thinkning about if i finish it with time to spare before i would leave for prime to go ahead and get my DOT physical done and get my permit. i know i still have to get looked at by their doctors but getting the permit early is something i think i should do as i would be ahead of the game as it where when i get there.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Yup...your permit, all the endorsements, and I think you can get started on your clearance for your TWIC...your HazMat has to wait until you get your CDL in hand, I believe.....so you have alot to do !!!!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

I had an appointment set up to get my TWIC started but the recruiter at Prime told me to wait til I got to Missouri and get it there. She also said I'd be doing all the testing for the Missouri CDL Class A permit because of the road test to turn the permit into a license.

From one veteran to another, thank you for you service. I did 8 1/2 years in the Navy Nuclear Power Program. I would be surprised if Prime does not accept you. I have heard many good things about their program.

I am also headed to PRIME and I went ahead and got my permit and my HAZMAT and TANKER endorsements, including the HAZMAT written. The state of Alabama will honor it for 1 year so after I pass my license and transfer it back to Alabama, they will then add the endorsement.

I am printing out the training material for the Pre-Trip Inspection so I can study it on the mind-numbing bus trip to Missouri this Saturday. I want to show up as prepared as possible, and thanks to TT, I am able to do that.

I will definitely be staying in touch and providing feedback on my experience, and I'll be just ahead of you so it will be current.

I did not do anything towards the TWIC. They will handle that there and they will pay for it ($135) up front and it will be included in the $25 monthly deduction from my pay once I am hired. The pay back for that is lumped in with the optional $200 per week advance they offer during the initial training phase.

If you have not done so, I also suggest reading Brett's book. You can find it from the home page by looking under "Becoming a Truck Driver." I am half way through it and it's a great read. Since Prime has a tanker division, and from what I read, I think that's the direction I will be pursuing.

Good luck with it all!

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
