Might depend on the particular state.
Can I get the Hazmat when I attempt my learners permit? Or do I need to wait until I have the real deal cdl class A?
Check to see what your state rules are. In Alabama they honor the test results for 1 year after the test is passed. So, after I get my license and transfer it back to Alabama, they will honor that test and add the endorsement at that time. But all states may not do it that way. I took by Tanker and HAZMAT tests when I got my permit.
CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
- Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
- Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
HAZMAT:
Hazardous Materials
Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
For Indiana You can take the test anytime you want but, they don't put it on the permit. They wait until you pass the CDL Exam and earn the actual license and then they'll add any endorsements you've qualified for at that time.

Nevada won't even let you test for HazMat until you have the background check by Homeland Security completed . . . each state probably has its own rules so you'll have to check with that DMV for any particulars . . .

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.DMV:
Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles
The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

check the va dmv website i saw on there u have to go to specific locations for the background check. idk if u can or cant take the test for the permit or wait till u have the cdl though. i do know the endorsment isnt added till u have the cdl though.

State of NH is TSA background check and an existing CDL A in hand . Permit holders need not apply .
