Short bio. I am retired Army (2005), and have worked contracting since leaving the military. I have been in the Middle East for the last three years and it is time to come home. We recently purchased a home/farm in SE Oklahoma. I maintain a security clearance, TS/SCI, since 1984. I have a MBA which may or may not be relevant. My primary concern is coming home to be with the wife. Three years is a long time.

I am in the process of research to select a school which is the main reason I initially joined this site. I am qualified for the Post 9/11 GI Bill or can also pay out of pocket for my training if necessary. This leaves me with multiple avenues of approach for training based on reading the articles on this site.

I am seeking input from others who may know of the training environment in the Oklahoma, North Texas, SE Mo, or Arkansas neck of the woods.

I have a clean driving record, am physically fit, run marathons, non smoker, no medications or medical conditions.

I look forward to hearing from anyone with suggestions, comments, ideas, school evaluations and general advice.

Thanks Phillip

Once you get home if you can afford it stay one for a little while. Cause once you start on this path it will be 8-12 weeks before you see even the outline of your house again.

Company sponsored schools can have you through school and in a training truck in roughly 3 weeks. Private schools take a bit longer and most times have smaller classes. But which ever way you go you need to remember that both are only there for one purpose.... Teach you just enough to get your CDL. Nothing more. If you want to learn to drive before starting with a company you will need something like of of the votech or community colleges. Now you will still need to go with a company trainer for real training which ever company you choose to go with. It's late so that I can barely focus on my phone to type this so others will be in later and they will post the correct links you will need to get you started down the right path.

Start here. High Road Training Program I guarantee you that if you go through every page of it passing the permits test will be a breeze. Seen it happen to many times. We have to me success stories about the program. It's completely free and it works 100% of the time due to the way it's setup. The creators of that program knew what they were doing. Which just happen to be our head honcho Brett and another member Trucker Mike. It has all the cdl manuals covered from every state since they are pretty much all the same plus a few hand built areas that even most schools do not teach. You cant cheat the system and has a very unique review system that teaches you the way humans learn the easiest. It really is that great. It even knows when you are guessing at the answers. It's almost an A. I.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
