I have four more years until I can retire from my first career and then I plan on becoming a truck driver.

Will it be difficult for me as an older, beginning driver, to get a job. I will only be 51years old?

Are there any companies that would actually prefer a more "mature" driver?

Only all of them. 51 is not old by any stretch of the imagination. There are drivers in their 60's and 70's out here.

Welcome aboard Larry!

The average age in trucking is in the late 40's. This is by no means a young person's game. In fact, because most of us make wiser, safer decisions as we get older the trucking industry actually favors age over youth. Can you believe that? It must be one of the only industries in this country that does.

You'll see age restrictions on the low end. Some companies will hire a driver at 21 years old, most companies want a driver that's at least 23, and some even set 25 as the minimum. But I've never heard of a maximum age and like Guyjax said there are a ton of drivers out there in their 60's and 70's. So you have nothing to worry about. You're right in the sweet spot for trucking.

This Friday I will be 41..

Just this year I got my CDL for a new career path.. Some may asked what changed..

Kids are getting older and able to take care of them selves... I have always want to drive.. Im leaving my self made business to do it.. but I can always fall back on my business if need be.

Ive been a fly fishing guide for the past 12 years.. Its the best thing you could imagine... You get paid to fish! But now I can fish other place it I get a lay over.. Just point me to a pond, creek, stream, river or lake.. and I will fish!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Just remember to get your fishing, license for that state. Far as I know there is not a national fishing license yet though some are pushing for it.

Thats good to hear, thanks for replying. I wish I could get started now, I can't get the prospect of being a truck driver out of my mind. I just have to stick this job out for 4 1/2 more years to get the early retirement. I hate to wish my life away, but I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas, Lol :)
