Example would be... Ever jumped on a teeter trotter? Seen how fast the other side flies up? Now imagine that teeter trotter is the dolly and instead of human weight moving the teeter trotter you have 12,000 lbs pushing down on one side and the other side flies up faster than you can blink. If I had to give it a speed it might be 400 to 500 feet pre second. And those dolly arms are solid steel where it hooks to the front trailers pintel hook. I don't even want to know what would happen it one made contact with your head. Not a pretty site.

No doubles for me, you just gave me nightmares sir.

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I'll be driving LTL hooking sets at Con-way. Two 28-footers that I bring into town, drop one, deliver, go pick up the other, deliver, bring one or two back. Remember I talked about wanting to pull something mean, tough, and ugly looking like a tanker or a flatbed? Well, nope. This time, God said, "Noooo." LOL. I swear, I'm gonna' be Thomas the Tank Engine with my two, cute "cars" in the back.

Ha! What a crack-up.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

THanks Guy! Appreciate the response. It does look strange seeing your Werner truck pulling ABF pups!
