I'm in school now in my 3rd week and I was nervous about it all, never drove a stick nor used a clutch, never driven anything bigger than at 26' Uhaul and now I'm driving and backing this big beast. You will improve everyday, and then once it clicks it gets better. Just go with it and follow your gut ya know. If YOU wanna do it then do it, don't let other people decide for you. Then when u succeed all the people that doubted you will feel dumb lol. Everyday I wake up ready to learn, can't wait to go with a trainer, that's where the real learning begins. I'm sure there are some bad ones but if you happen to get one and don't like how your treated, deal with it or if its really bad request a new one. Good luck!!

The Highroad series is a amazing tool. I started it but did not finish it, just gotta stay with it. I must admit that my learning and testing would have been much easier and smoother had i finished the training. I cant stress enough how important it is. Dont do like I did and start and then get sidetracked like I did. You will learn it all school, but it will be fresh already. I did well, but would have done better had I finished Bretts training.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

I see you're about 1/3 of the way through the High Road Training Program with a 97% average so far - way to go!!! Just keep working at that program. It's everything you'll need to know for the permit exam, all of your endorsements, and of course the logbook rules and weight & balance.

Keep it up! smile.gif

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Logbook:

A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.

1st off I will apologize ahead of time BC I know I'm goin to offend ya in some way.but here goes ur friend is an ass the drivers who say that crud wear girlie panties ya know the ones that strippers wear.and now back to business put ur big girl panties on as star car would say and get strong BC not all trucking is drop and hook some places are live load and unload mist companies are no touch freight.

its a lot of lonely long days/nights out here a lot of ppl will degrade ya on the cab some in person, let it all go in one ear and out the other.if a woman can squezze a watermelon through a drinking straw she can do anything my gram used to say.

so get over ur fears and come here for moral support and those wiery questions ya may have this site as ya may have seen has a lot of old schoolers on it ,such as my self as I'm told now by 50 other drivers yes I'm counting lol. that will help out and are willing to help out.

Drop And Hook:

Drop and hook means the driver will drop one trailer and hook to another one.

In order to speed up the pickup and delivery process a driver may be instructed to drop their empty trailer and hook to one that is already loaded, or drop their loaded trailer and hook to one that is already empty. That way the driver will not have to wait for a trailer to be loaded or unloaded.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Crazy Rebel is right on the money when he says there are a lot of people here who will help you. It's the whole reason Brett started this, and fortunately for him there are others who are willing to jump right in and offer their help and advice. There are no dumb questions, and we understand that there are not a lot of places to go get reliable advice from pertaining to the industry. So, feel free to ask us about anything you need.

They'll treat you like a customer. At company sponsored schools they do the same, based on my experiences.

I worded this wrong. At company sponsored schools they will treat you right but they'll only have so much patience. They aren't there to work with you for months, it's either get your license when we say to or they'll send you packing. It's much faster paced also.

That is why I went the Comm. College route. The school was 10 1/2 weeks long, and I learned a lot more than I would at a company school. I didn't learn everything, and I am certainly NOT perfect. Today is proof of that, but I was more prepared for the road.

Dave - I am going back and forth can't make up my mind on if I want to go to a school on my own or go through a company school. But right now I am more focused on studying on this site once I complete this or am just about done then I will be a bit more focused on the schooling part.

Old School- Thank you, I will be sure not to be shy if I am stressing over something.

Crazy- so I am more than a day late on replying my apologies.

some of my fears ( the more personal fears) can take years if not a life time to get over but. Those just like my other fears I am going to push through don't you worry I will get my tiny booty in a rig and hopefully sooner than later.

This week has been pretty busy so not much studying been going on this week but ill be getting back in gear by Monday morning for sure!!

Brett- Thank you I will do my best to keep my grades up.
