So I will be starting school on Monday April 22nd. I have started sending out applications to my list of about 20 "top shelf" companies. It is amazing how fast some of them respond..
Swift called me about 15 minutes after I clicked submit; the recruiter emailed me some disclosure forms so they can pull my DMV records, general background check, 2nd grade report card, and she mentioned something about a latex glove and a massage... Just kidding! But she said once they have my reports in a day or two I'll have a pre-hire.
Also got a call few hours after submitting to Werner, they gave me a pre-hire.
USA Truck said to call them when I am a few days from graduation.
Still waiting on others, and still submitting.
Interesting thing is that none of them even mentioned pay, home time, just the basic questions about DUI , felonies, accidents, and so on. Is that normal? Should I be asking about pay and stuff now or closer to graduation?
Yes its normal. You are not an employee yet and they are only going by what you put on your application. No company will do any deep search or give you a serious look until you are done with school and ready to work. All the background checks cost money and they will not do ten till they know your serious about working with a certain company

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.
Driving Under the Influence
Companies change their payscale and benefits quite often, not to mention home time policies, available divisions, and others. So it's best to wait until you're close to decision time to compare the companies one final time.
Yeah makes sense. But it is kind of exciting to hear them say "you're pre-hired. Where should we mail/email the letter?"
