You need to pass the written test for 3 endorsements to get your permit for a CDL-A: 1) General Knowledge, 2) Air Brakes and 3) Combination Vehicle. You will also need to pass a drug test and get your physical in order to begin practice driving on public roads. You can study all you want to here on the high road under the cdl training materials at top of page. I would say once you are breezing through those tests you are ready to go to the dmv and take the 3 tests required to get your learners permit (CDIP). It may vary some state to state but that's how it went for me in NM. BTW in NM you can only take the endorsements and fail 3 times then you must wait a year, unlike most (all?) other states where you can take them as many times as you want till you pass.

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A vehicle with two separate parts - the power unit (tractor) and the trailer. Tractor-trailers are considered combination vehicles.
The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
Thanks for the response Phil. I've been utilizing the materials here for a few weeks now and find myself getting all the correct answers and acing the quizzes.

You're ready - go for it!
I think that David A. pretty much nailed it. I would just add, know your state manual as well. I took my tests last Thursday. In addition to the ones listed, I passed doubles and triples, tanker and the Texas specific Permit test. On the tanker test I felt there were some HAZMAT questions. That is the test that I did the worst on. In Texas, after your third fail, you can go back the next day and test again, BUT you start from scratch no matter what you had already passed.
Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.
Woohoo! Got my permit on the first try. Thanks TT!
Now to get everything in line to go to Knight Transportation.

Congratulations David, I told you that you were ready!
By the way, I just started working for Knight on a dedicated flat-bed account - I'm loving it. I'm technically out of the Gulfport Mississippi terminal , but I have a special dispatcher out of the SAPA plant in Delhi, Louisiana.
A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
That's great Old School. Say, is it very difficult getting on with Knight? My plan is to go through their cdl school and afterward trying to get on at Averritt.

David, I had no problems, but I came in as an experienced driver. I'm assuming you will be in their Squire program, I've heard good things about it.
Almost any CDL Training will be fast paced, and I'm sure the Squire program is the same way. Just work hard and keep your distance from the losers in your group. You'll know what I mean when you get started. We had nine people in my orientation group. I could have told you after five minutes of being around them which ones would make it. The five that I kept my distance from all went home on the third day.

Hello everyone. Great website you have here. I feel it's been a real asset for me studying for my CDL. However, like the title says, how will I know I'm ready to take that first step towards a new career?
