Thirty years in the electrical sign manufacturing business. I loved it, but finally got out, and found that I love trucking also. I like to be challenged, and both of my career choices have given me plenty of that.

I owned a self-service dog wash that sold dog and cat supplies and trained dogs. I loved it but I couldn't compete with the big guys, Petco and Petsmart and the Internet. Before that I was a paralegal and it had it's moments but I can't say that I loved it. Now I need a job and at 57 I'm having a bit of trouble of finding one that pays. My finances are in the toilet and I need to save my neck before someone flushes. My husband suggested truck driving because I have talked about driving trucks when we were first married. I'm still trying to figure out if he is supporting me or he has alternative motives, LOL. My dad's work kept him away for periods of time, my mom was always glad to see him but I think she was also glad to see him go.

Ha you guys all had real jobs. I did five years delivering pizza in the same small town. Just figured it was time to move up to delivering to a bigger area.

The good thing about having such a crappy job before driving a truck is that the change in income really stands out. Making over twice as much as ever before in my life promotes enthusiasm for this job.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

I retired after 28 years in law enforcement. Over the years had a local race team running IMCA dirt modifieds, owned a small auto repair shop, flipped a few houses, and spent 22 years as a driving instructor for law enforcement. And if that wasn't enough I was a school board trustee for 8 years. I felt it was time for a more relaxed second career. Lol

Quite the mix of backgrounds. I started out as an HVAC Tech....got into facilities engineering...then facilities mgmt. 26yrs worth. Account I was on was going belly up so jumped into sales/management for a small local company. Owner decides he's wanting to retire...made a jump to another local company doing just sales. Had looked at trucking 7yrs ago until I landed the first sales job...and ended up being drawn back to it again this year. Good friend of mine is also interested so odds are we'll run team after we graduate from CDL school. I too seem to be attracted to a challenge....

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Did a management gig for about 7 years until it hit me that I absolutely hated it. Went to college, did a stint with the govt, some more college then trucking. By far the best decision of them all.
